Our Director of OEM Solutions, Amanda Tischer Buros, recently shared valuable insights on this topic during a panel discussion at the ISRI2024 conference – now known as the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) – in Las Vegas. Amanda emphasized the intrinsic alignment of ITAD companies with ESG principles. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You’re probably doing a lot of these things already,” she remarked, highlighting how our industry’s activities naturally align with ESG objectives. Whether it’s responsibly managing IT assets, adhering to certified standards like R2, e-Stewards, or RIOS, or engaging in community initiatives, ITAD companies are inherently involved in ESG practices.
Buros further explained that the key lies in recognizing and structuring these activities under an ESG framework to effectively report and communicate them. “All of these things already exist within our organizations, it’s just about identifying them and then bringing them in and underneath that framework, to be able to tell and report that story,” Amanda emphasized.
The process of starting ESG reporting involves a crucial step known as the materiality assessment, which Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations undertook last year with a third-party consultant. This assessment helps a company pinpoint key focus areas significant to its business model and stakeholder interests. It helped us identify fifteen core focus areas vital to our business and stakeholder interests, including recycling and reuse, hazardous materials management, workforce health and safety, supply chain management practices, and data security.
The journey towards comprehensive ESG reporting is not without its challenges. As highlighted by Kali Smith, Director of Sustainability at Sunnking Sustainable Solutions, achieving team buy-in and addressing sensitive topics like emissions requires robust leadership support. Amanda echoed this sentiment, noting, “Those tools and that extra help is really going to be what helps any of you that are just starting that journey right now kind of take that leap and get going. For those of us that started this a while ago, it was definitely kind of like wandering around in the dark.” She underscored the importance of resources like ReMA’s new ESG toolkit in guiding companies through the complexities of ESG reporting.
